I use free templates available on the net.

 

then u shouldn't charge for them, it's illegal to use free templates for commercial purposes...

Is it illegal to charge even if I retain the link back to the template author? (of course it's not there in my screenshot, but want to clarify)

I don't think you can use a free template for commercial purposes unless it's released under the right license. You can however charge for the act of converting one design to the other

You can charge if you are modifying the template to suit needs of the client. Certainly with open source templates, not sure about creative commons ones though...
