Long tail keywords are more beneficial in comparison of short tail. You need to analyze the keywords according to your business, you need to make sure what user are looking for, which keywords are being searched, after that You can take help of Google's keyword tool to decide about keywords. This tool can tell you the amount of traffic on specific keyword and much more.

Long tailed keywords are much better than short tailed since you are more likely to rank for them.

Long tail is better if the competition is high, but when your industry is not having a lot of competition, you can try unique and interesting short tail keywords, as long as the keywords you set explains everything about your site.

If you want to rank quickly then you need select low competition keywords that to below 30% and monthly global searches should be less than 1k.

Use long tail keywords for quick ranking, but remember that doesn't mean you'll get lots of traffic with long tails..

See, you don't need to get confused first of all. All you have to do is find as many possible number of keywords related to your website. Then from that set of keywords, check for the competition of various keywords. The ones with moderate or less competition are the best selection.
