I am thinking of this new site...

I was thinking about making a site that releases 2-6 templates every month to users with a subscription. Does anyone know if these sort of websites do well, or are there too many to compete with? ;)

Cheers, pr0xy.

Even if there are alot, as long as yours offers something different you should have a good response. Will it be a free or paid subscription?

yeah, a paid or free...you might not get many hits with a paid...usually once people get a template they keep it for a while...

There are plenty of good free template sites, so you you need to provide designs that are striking and have an added value.

i'm doubtful about the success of your venture. you need to provide great templates, and free or at a lowcost to begin with.

i might be wrong though.

I don't think it'd do very well. I am assuming the subscription would be paid, but who would need to stay subscribed? I mean, how many people do you know who change their Website's design every month?

There are sites like this out there, however I doubt they do very well. You can find good templates for free and you can get a custom template for pretty cheap, so theres not much room for a site like yours. You can always sell your templates individually, which might work out better, since people usually only want one template from your site. Also, you kind of have to keep the site going (making new designs) even if you dont have many customers because what happens when they pay $x, then you dont have any new designs next month? If your a good designer, you should be able to do all right. Good luck!

There are many sites out there, but I think the majority of template sites make the most from just selling ind. templates (template monster, joomlashack, etc). If your interested, I have some phpld template domains that would suite your needs. Best of luck.

I would not go down that road:

- huge competition with free template sites (no sign up necessary)
- Only beginners use templates - no return visitors.
- hard SERP due to competition.

Depends if they are standard templates or aimed at a market, ie: Joomla, Wordpress etc, take a look at this website www.rockettheme.com, I pay to be a member, they only release 1 template per month but when you join you get all the old templates plue another years worth.

Good concept if you are into making alot of sites or changing yours regular.

How about providing specific templates designed with each member
in mind?

For example: a user signs up for the monthly service and pays $60
a month, and in exchange they receive 4 custom templates that
have been designed specifically for them and their sites.

Handing out stock templates is going to be hard. As the above posts
have mention, you need to have something unique about your site.

That idea is a good one, until you start getting members. Are you, or rather do you feel you will have the time and patience to create 4 custom templates per member? If you receive just 50 members that will be 200 different templates you will have to create.

Now what if you receive members 11 or 12 a day. Are you going to be able to meet your customers needs of 44 to 48 templates that day?

You can run with a template based website, but there are smarter ways of going about it.

Consider offering templates this way:

What if on some days certain templates where available for free and some not. Include a counter to explain that in "X" amount of days this template will be free.

"Want this template now? Sign up for membership!"

Charge a monthly subscription, where members are able to log in and download all of the templates they wish to and maybe a help install service.

Where as free members can only download two or three different ones each day.
