I am sick of people judging sites using alexa rank.

Whenever I've tried to sell links and provided people with my stats... a couple people always pm and say things like

"you claim to have this much traffic but why is your alexa rank so low you should have an alexa rank higher than this" yadda yadda. the odd person even accuses me of faking stats :/

Do these people even know how alexa ranks are calculated?
why do they think alexa rank is more accurate than realtime stats generated by your site!

This is starting to piss me off now :p

If Alexa ranking is what makes a website valuable in their eyes, then it's good to keep away or you won't be doing much business around that. Alexa ranking is clearly not worth spending your time on, and as long as it is one of the most important thing to judge a website upon, you have to move on, and simply look for someone else to talk to.

Abdul, you are in the UK, the very country which drives those statistics. Get over it and move on.

it doesn't effect me financially I mean for every person claiming i fake my stats or whatever their are many more sensible ones. but i cant deny it does annoy me.

Maybe I too should just install the alexa toolbar and set my site on autorefresh every 10 secs lol

I have a website with 10k/day which is not even close to my 200/day directory in Alexa rankings. (no tricks about hits in both)

    It's just a crap :D

Unless you have a high tarffic site, all you have to do to improve your alexa rank is make your site your homepage. It can be easily faked.

The UK does not drive the Alexa statistics, not by a long shot.

"Abdul, send your clients here and calmly explain to them that of the 1bn web users in the world, only a few million have an Alexa toolbar and thus contribute to the Alexa rankings.

Ergo Alexa is in no way accurate you stupid b*stard; and if you ever question my authority again I will kill you!"

That way you're bound to boost business ;)

I agree. Alexa is not the right tool to measure traffic. But what about top rated sites? Yahoo has Alexa Rank. 1. I think if your Alexa is very low (below 10,000), then your site is getting good amount of traffic.

I checked sites in your signature , they all showed as if they are dead at alexa . That might be a reason for people doubting your stats .

My site gets about 80 uniques and alexa shows 1-2.

Assuming your are all right. Why the busiest web sites are ranked in Alexa according to their traffic (Yahoo, Google, MSN, myspace, etc. ) ?

Not all users have their alexa bar installed, but there is percentage of them who visit your web site

Website statistics is a tricky business. Some are more accurate than others but they are never precise. We must just try to live with it. ;)

My two pennies worth: Alexa is fallible but it's getting better. They're now splitting the country of origin down more acturately and, speaking personally, my stats have even'd out recently which implies to me they getting better at moderating their inputs...

I believe this to be true as well, we were 19,000 in May of last year. Our traffic has gone up but Alexa has brought us down to 78,000, which is probably more accurate.

Using Alexa rankings when selling links is almost as annoying as quoting predicted PR....

Just take off any adsense and join an alexa autosurf site for a while, and don't mention the alexa in your thread. When they go off to check on their own, it'll look 'ok' to them, when the normals look at the actual stats, they wont care about the alexa.

Alexa Rank is the main way for people to verify your claims
No one in the world can rely on just a statement from someone that their site gets this or that much traffic

For a start, its all a question of where the traffic that you are getting is coming from. Anyone can get traffic, but high quality traffic is another matter entirely

Think of it like this, if you website was selling like crazy, why would you need to sell any links? If you cant learn how to sell real products from your website, then I would say, the links will be pretty pointless

Many websites that "sell" advertising, provide very poor advertising to their clients. You have to understand that people need to be sure your website will deliver before they will waste yet more of their advertising budget on "links"

This is why most people would look at your Alexa Rank before spending any money on advertising

Alexa ranking is not an objective source of getting ranking. More so if you decide to invest on it.

The thing is Alexa can be useful.

If you have been watching it for a while, and
watching your own stats, you begin to get a
    feeling for it.

Like any other thin sampling method, it is only
really useful as a trend indicator.

The best indicator is *third party* stats.

Actually, the first time I ran into the concept of *audited*
stats was in the UK in relation to the Internet Advertising Bureau.

The possibility of course is that the potential buyer was just using
every negotiation tactic in the book.
