Social Media Marketing is a good place to start. You can opt to buy ad space but don't go crazy. I usually test with a couple of spaces then see if they would work. If they do, then I use the money generated from having those ads to fund the next set of advertising space that I would be buying. Just to make sure that you don't spend more than what you get as ROI.
Social media will definitely work but it will take some time... depending on your experience and the amount of time you use it though.
shopping is general.. so i dont know what exact u will sell.. but clothing SUCKS when it comes to buying it online. Software is good to sell as conversion is great so if u just managed traffic then i believe u will get paid. or ebooks - as shoes and other clothing is difficult to try out online then softwares and ebooks that are internet stuff will i believe convert good cause many shops have stuff u can buy from same stores offline and many might be tempted to go outdoors and buy asap. but im not sure as ive never tested it out.

Create a Facebook fan page and link to your latest products. Tweet your latest products. Get in discussions with that product in online forums and link back to your shop url. Use an affiliate program. Pretty much, help everyone you can and build a name for yourself in your industry.
you can add your website to online directories to increase backlinks you can also look for and list on niche business directories featuring e-shops selling the type of products that you do you can also find B2C networks where you can create a free business page eventhough you have your own e-shop, you might also like to consider expand sales through other online marketplaces like ebay, amazon, as long as your profit margin can sustain the level of commission they charge finally, try to see if you can find blogs that specialise in product reviews of the type of product you sell. you can try contacting the blogger and see if they might like to review your products or feature your shop in a post
Unique Selling Proposition (USP) -- what is yours going to be? I mean, how is your site going to be different than the competition? That's really how you're going to a) drive more traffic and b) get more sales. You have to stand out -- don't just copy an existing idea. Give ppl a reason to buy from you and not the other choices available to them. That's the hardest part to determine...
