Hi Jason. Welcome to the webmaster world. The best category for you is going to be something that you are interested in and passionate about. Keeping up a website is work...seriously...but it can be the most enjoyable job you've ever had or a pain in the behind. So, you want to make it about something that you enjoy. I'll be honest, you are embarking on a long journey. I don't know your background, but if you are completely new to the world of HTML and the like, you have much to learn. However if you have any experience at all, even if it's just a MySpace account, that will help you out. Luckily, you are in the right place. There are many helpful people here at DP. You can basically get instructions for any process. My best suggestion for you after you choose a category would be to learn WordPress. It is the easiest and most versatile platform to run any type of site on the Internet. While it is initially designed to be a blogging platform, with the right template and by using Pages, you can set it up just as you would a website. There is even a WordPress template out there that can make your WordPress site a forum. You won't find an easier platform to update. As far as forums go, they make a great website. After all, they are among the first forms of social media developed for the Internet after newsgroups. Forums take a lot of effort to upkeep, and without traffic, you don't have a site, really. I would suggest starting with your own website on a specific topic and then add a forum later if all goes well. As far as the basic things to start a site...it depends on how much you plan to spend. If you're going free, then do a Google search for sites that host free websites like Weebly.com. Blogger.com is also a decent free platform. Like WordPress, it is designed for blogging, but it also has the option for static pages. If you're goin' pro right away, then the basics look something this: A domain name. $10 and less depending on if you get .com, or something like .info Hosting. You can find hosting at GREAT prices right here at DP in the Hosting Forum. Prices start at less than $3 per month. WordPress, Joomla, a web template. That's pretty much it. You own corner of the web won't set you back too much. Keep in mind that if you website becomes popular, you want hosting that you can expand in the future to allow for the extra traffic. I wish you the best of luck just starting out. Here's to your success!
Hard to follow the awesome post above me, but I will try. I personally think a personal blog or website is the best way to start out, as you are experimenting with creating a website and the focus of a personal website is not really to rank high in search engines and earn money. You can learn from your mistakes this way and prepare yourself for another website in which you try out all you learn to attempt to be successful. When you do think about creating another web site, choosing a topic you enjoy is the best way to go, as stated in the previous post. Be wary of starting a bunch of websites and not putting very much effort into them, as that will lead to disappointment. You can have lots of different websites in different topics, but make sure they get the attention they deserve or else it will just be wasted effort and time. I assume you are getting into the website business to make money, so make sure to use these forums and available tools to help you achieve the most success in your website building experience. If you want to go ahead and start off creating a monetary website, you should definitely check out the Adwords keyword checker and try to register a domain that relates to your content and is memorable, as that is one of the most important steps to building your first website. Hope I helped.
