There are a lot of good resources. DP is a great one, but to understand what advice and info is great you must have some knowledge.

So first study SEOmoz, SEObook by Aaron Wall, blogs of really authoritative people in SEO industry, WebCEO university and manual are also good resources.

And after learning something go to forums to ask questions, I think you will have a lot of them while learning.

I personally dont see that there is a problem using quality seo software, if seo software was going to get your site banned why hasnt the www.seoelite.com been banned. Using seo software saves time for you to use on development on other areas of your site.
