    Hi!

I have phpbb installed in my site and everyday i see a new spam post and spammers are registering instead of real people!

Go to your control panel's General Admin, Configuration, and Enable Visual Confirmation. Most are bots and don't get past it.

Check out http://www.phpbbhacks.com for more security/spam hacks you can use.

trinsic, you got it right there. I don't run a phpbb forum, but a vbulleting forum. We have to do that same thing to keep the spammers off of our boards. I am sure it's a similar hack!

Check their mails and add them in to the banned address, I am using IPB and its easy to add banned email address banned list, like this *@spam.com. :)

You don't need to check every member, Only those members who are just joined and spamming ( These are bots ) check their email address, add them in Ban List and you will see the big difference in your forum.

There are many antispam mods available for vbulletin. The most effective is NoSpam but I also had great results with spam list blockers.

I'd say develop a custom field using CAPTCHA, not image, text. Perhaps a simple question, that should eliminate spam.

If you’re using phpBB, you have to install:

    Anti Bot Question

I actually tried a couple of different mods myself, and this seems to be the only one that works. Without this mod, your phpBB message board will perish …

Also make sure they need to activate their membership if you don't do that already.

I run a Phpbb forum and had the same problem from day one. The two things I did to stop spam bots are:

    1. Select registration type to 'admin' from admin panel - this means the admin needs to activate any new accounts.
    2. I used this mod, which adds a questions on the registration page only humans can answer. :D

    Hope this helps.

I just had a preview on the latest vB version that should be available soon, it has this feature installed (Anti Bot Questions) which is a great addition to the script, it also comes with tons of features. I believe they just made a great script greater :D

phpbb is typically horrible with spam, but SMF is much better from experience.
