ok i was some changement with permalinks in wordpress options... all thing was done but there is one message occured :-- You should update your .htaccess now. If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. what the hell of that means???? what i do that now?
Pretty much it means if you don't know what that means you should not use it. Seriously, some some hosting companies have problems with it's use. You may not be able to use it for that reason. I don't use it and I could.
Means if you have access to your root folder (http://www.site.com) through FTP then you should go there and find the file .htaccess and chmod it to 777 then go back and change your permalinks and it will work. But some hosting companies you have to do additional work. Startlogic is one for an example. Basically though you need to chmod your .htaccess file in the root folder to 777 and your good.
Hi Syvee, As in most cases the .htaccess file on your server is not rewritable! First goto your domain root and look for the file named '.htaccess' But as in most cases it is an invisible file and you won't be able to find it! Now from what you say it appears that you donot use htaccess that often! So do this .... When you get that message stating Copy whatever was in the box below that and save it as a notepad file on your desktop! Now upload this file on your server, right-click, select 'rename' (Or press F2) and rename this file to '.htaccess' (Note the dot before the name) Once you are done, your permalinks will be enabled! Hope it helps, Abhishek
Change .htaccess to 777 temporary and hit on update permilinks, .htaccess will update automatically. Now again make .htaccess to default rights.
If you run WordPress 2.0 then you only have to update .htaccess ONCE, if you make changes later, the contents would be the same anyway, so no need to copy and paste it again (or to leave .htaccess writable to everybody on that web host).
FileZilla FTP is great for managing permissions with a right-click. Side note: It's also the best FTP program I've ever used.
