My hosting account was suspended due to the fact that I use too much RAM (15 - 35% of the server and it crashed 3 times in July).

My hosting package allows 150GB transfer/month. (I know it's different than RAM but bear with me)

My site at this point is getting about 15K page view/day which is about 1/2 GB putting me at 10% of my alloted data transfer rate.

All my pages are static html with nothing running on the server side.

So how can my sight be using too much RAM while using 10% of my data transfer.

Can a site actually use 150GB without straining a server?

Sounds like bollocks to me. I only run out of 'allocated memory' when I create variables with too much data in them, AFAIK, scripts like that are the only way to drain actual RAM.

Me thinks your host is full of it. Time for dedicated perhaps? Be in charge of your own box. Managed hosting is great, they will do the geeky stuff, you are in charge. Doesn't have to cost much either.

Here is the exact response I got when I asked why my account was suspended:

The problem is your site is using anywhere from 12%-35% of the servers ram at any given time. This is of course unacceptable for a "Shared" server with multiple other sites hosted on it regardless of your hosting plan with us. The excessive resource usage has caused the server to crash 3x in July alone. For this reason your site is suspended indefinitely. Let us know when you would like to move your site so that we may unsuspend it for 3 hrs while you make the move.

I have since moved somewhere nice:)

They should be able to tell you which files cause it, but static HTML won't be amongst them. I'd flip the bird to them.

Your pages are just pure html? Then either your host paid ten cents for the servers or they're lying to you.

I have had all sorts of crap reasons given by hosts and often found them out to be complete lies - if you are static html pages with that volume of traffic you wouldn't be able to tie up/crash of a server just serving html pages. Best just walk away.

Yes, my home page uses JS to display a random image, but it's all html, no database.

Funny thing, in Jan. the server stayed up while I hit slashdot, 100K uniques in a few hours.
