    Hello Friend,

My view is that Meta tag is very important because when we add our keywords in title and description then weight of our keywords increase then we can get good ranking in Google.

I think what Matt Cutts is referring to Meta title, But I think Meta tags is least important nowadays, but I'm not saying that you don't have to pay attention to it. You should do the correct way in creation of meta tags. then link build your site and fresh content should do the trick.

Title and Description Meta are still important but keywords Meta has lost its influence in search engine ranking algorithms, especially in Google.

Google reveals only about the META keywords tag that they doesn't use it in search results but if you see about other many search engines like Yahoo! search which are still using them. We can still use them for our pages.

Yes, google does not give more importance to meta keywords. But other search engines give importance to it.
By using proper meta keywords in meta title and description can give better ranking in search engines.

<meta name="keyword"> - This HTML <meta> element is ignored by virtually every search engine on the planet due to its massive abuse in the past. Definitely NOT used by Google in the ranking algorithm to rank a page for a particular keyword phrase.

<meta name="description"> - This HTML <meta> element is used by the ranking algorithms of "some" less sophisticated search engines. It is NOT used by Google in their ranking algorithm to rank a page for a particular keyword phrase.

But the meta description IS very important even at Google because it is sometimes shown as the snippet of text for your SERPs listing at Google (if your URL doesn't have a DMOZ entry AND all of the keywords from the search phrase appear in your meta description). It should not exceed 145-150 characters in length (as that is all Yahoo and Google will typically display, respectively) unless you're targeting keyword phases longer than 3 words in length (very long tail phrases) in which case Google recently announced they are now displaying longer snippets (I've seen snippets from meta descriptions 300-400 characters in length for long tail phrases). Include a call to action.

Having a custom meta description for each page with a call to action can dramatically increase your click-thru-rate.

<title> - First of all <title> is not a meta element even though people frequently refer to it as such. Just because it appears in the <head> doesn't make it a meta element. Beginning with <meta ...> makes it a meta element. The <title> element is the MOST important on-page ranking factor and IS used in Google's ranking algorithm and probably the ranking algorithm of every other search engine on the planet.

    /agree

I've heard him say it in person at Pubcon and in interviews and stuff many other times in interviews and stuff in the past. I don't understand all the hoopla and why it's such a revelation for everyone. I guess seeing it in a video makes it real! lol

While meta tags are not as important as they used to be... they are still a factor in SEO. SEO nowadays is much more competitive. So if your competitors are optimizing their meta tags, you should be too.

Matt Cutts and Google have simply confirmed what knowledgeable SEO have believed for years.

To answer your question, Google doesn't consider the meta keywords important, but the title and description still hold weight.

Other search engines, however, still consider meta keywords. Just not google
