I almost got scammed...

I got one of those emails from someone interested in buying a domain, except first I had to pay for an appraisal. Luckily I had heard of this scam before...so I promptly told them that I knew what they were up to and that I wasn't paying for anything.

Just a heads up to domain newbies!

If they asked for appraisal, then tell them to pay the fee and get it appraised anywhere they want. They are interested in buying the domain and so they have to pay for it. Why we?

Yeah I had this experience before, way back. I wasn't really 100% sure it actually was a scam until you mentioned it now, so thanks ;)

The reason I had my doubts even long afterward was that they gave 2 options for appriasal websites to use

So to get this straight, these guys who are sending the emails actually own the appraisal companies?

Yes. They are affiliated with them or own them.

I almost got sucked into this once. I use Godaddy for my appraisals in the rare instances that I need one.
