How was traffic coming back? What worries me is next time Houston may be hit, people will not evacuate. None of my friends gogt out. They waited too long. Some started out but due to traffic turned around. Shannon
Rita ravages region near state line But Texas, Louisiana report no deaths in hurricane's aftermath CAMERON, Louisiana (CNN) -- Towns near where Hurricane Rita made landfall have had all but a handful of buildings destroyed, including nearly all homes in Cameron, Holly Beach and Creole, officials say. Though less destructive than Hurricane Katrina, Rita caused extensive damage when it roared ashore Saturday morning near the Texas-Louisiana border with 120 mph winds. Link
At the time we decided to head home, there were only a handful of communities that had lifted the mandatory evacuation order and said it was safe/ok for residents to return home. We decided to pack up immediately and head home while most of Houston and Galveston were still prohibiting residents to return. As a result, I think we beat the rush. Still, I45 South between Dallas and Houston was closed and we were re-routed to I35 South from Dallas to Waco. From there we took Hwy 6/US 290 into Houston. We only experienced a couple of bottlenecks and for the most part were able to drive the speed limit even though traffic was about as thick as normal rush hour traffic for Hwy 6/US 290. You snooze, you lose!
Glad to hear you guys made it through the storm ok. I think I saw one could on Saturday morning in Austin, besides that it was blue skies and a lot of sun. Oh yeah, and two of the hottest days on record.
