It may be free or it may be a couple dollar trial. The reasoning behind this is that the company has averaged out how much money they make per trial/sign up. For example, if they charge $30 per month and their average customer pays 3 months before canceling(I picked a round figure for example's sake), then they make $90 per sign up/trial. This means the $30 bucks they pay you still leaves them with a profit. It's important to note that trial implies the user enters a credit card number and until they cancel, their credit card is rebilled on a monthly basis.
