hubpage/squidoo lens or my own site?

I was thinking of putting up a new site to try and get some affiliate sales and I was wondering if you think ill get better results buying a domain and hosting it myself or using a hubpages/squidoo type thing. Will my results be better with one of these because (I'm assuming) the site would get a good backlink from their main site & the main domain has a high pr or am i better off getting my own domain that is one of the keywords I'm looking at. I'm not really worried about the cost of the domain you can get a .info for like a buck.

Ive seen some hubpages and squidoo lenses rank well before so im wondering if its even worth it to make my own site.

Get hosting at GoDaddy or HostGator or some other webhost for a few bucks a month, install WordPress, find a free theme (or if you have the bucks buy Thesis), and you can have a nice looking site up in days without writing a single line of code.

Maybe I'm weird, but I don't believe in hubpages or squidoo or any free hosting scenario. I always want to do something that ends up being against their TOS or just simply can't be done (like redirects, custom 404s, etc.) Having complete control of my site is worth the $6/month at GoDaddy IMO.

The answer is of course "both". You use squidoo etc to drive traffic to your own site and add SEO link value to it.

Use Squidoo and Hub like blogs - articles get both traffic and seo quality links back to your main site once established

if affiliate marketing is your target, then having your own domain will give you the better benefit and conversion. squidoo and hubpages are find and lot of power affiliates use them as landing pages but they also come with their own advertisement. with the exisitng advertisement on those pages, you dont have a whole lot of control over user behavior as to where they will click, on your ads or on adsense ads. you will just get more conversion with your own domain which is the bottom line

Lenses and hubs will rank faster, but you'll make less money and have less control

if it's a long term and serious project, then you should definitely get your own website, plus don't think that a squidoo len will outrank a normal website, it's all about external links, the squidoo len will only move up in google if you point quality links to it.

Never depend on one medium or property. Its wise to use all to your advantage! i would say create your site, create hubs, create lenses and then link them in a daisy chain or maybe link wheel!
