httpd crashing server

I need a little help everyone. My dedicated server has been crashing quite often lately. I run top and monitor it and things are fine. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, hundreds of httpd processes will appear and the load average jumps up very high making my websites unresponsive. I have been killing apache and it brings the server back to normal load. Then start up apache again and things run fine for a while... Then boooom, happens again.

How can I tell what website or what script is causing this problem? I've tried looking through logs and just can't put my finger on it. It's almost as though some script goes into an infinite loop but what would it be???

    Any help or thoughts?

    Ryan

There seems to be a bug in the software that will cause this. It may be related to the new way that they are now rotating logs. There is a thread on the support forum about this:

The last poster states that he downgraded eaccelerator, do you have this enabled in the easy apache configuration? If so, it may be worth recompiling without it, then add in the older version. cPanel is aware of the problem, as it is effecting a lot of people.

Thanks so much Chris. I will try that. Would it be bad to just run without eaccelerator enabled completely? Or would you highly recommend going in afterwards and adding the older version?

I guess I need to research what that does.

Its a php caching engine, which, will make your php driven websites quicker, in most cases.

So far so good Chris. I re-did apache without eaccelerator. Have not installed any version as of yet. THings seem to be stable. I'll monitor it over night. APPRECIATE the help!!!
