httpd.conf; changes have no effect

I've been trying to get .htaccess files to work, using Apache 1.3 in Mac OSX 10.3. I don't have any previous experience messing with Apache, so I don't really know what I'm doing. Apache's documentation and various web pages all suggest modifying httpd.conf setting "AllowOverride" to "All". I did so, with no effect. In the process of trying to figure out why, I discovered that no changes to httpd.conf were having any effect whatsoever. For instance, changing DocumentRoot also has no effect, and neither does simply deleting httpd.conf altogether.

I assume there's some simple little step I'm supposed to do to tell Apache to integrate the changes in httpd.conf, but so far I can't find any reference in documentation to this. Anyone know what I'm supposed to do? Thanks!

What was the location of the httpd.conf you were editing?

You did tell apache to reload its config right? killall -HUP httpd *should* do this for you, although I've never used it under OS X so I couldn't say for sure. Restarting your mac is a more drastic way to achieve the same - putting it into sleep mode will have no effect though.

"Yoy did tell apache to reload its config right?"

    Sure didn't. :)

"killall -HUP httpd *should* do this for you, although I've never used it under OS X so I couldn't say for sure."

That seems to work just fine. I was figuring there was some simple step like this that the document writers just figured was too obvious to be worth mentioning, or something. Thanks!
