https is more secure than http. https is basically used for secure online transaction specially in e commerce websites or bank websites.

    Hello,

You should definitely implement 301 redirects from the versions "http://" to "https://". Your site will stay available, and your users won't notice a thing, but Google will see a definite signal that you're moving your site to the secure version and update its indexes. It may take some time for Google to update its indexes, but the site will remain working just fine.

    Hello,

https sites are rarely rank on top for search queries. I have a bad experience, one of my client changed his site from http to https, it affected the site badly, lost his top positions. Then we changed back to http. Only the payment page needs to be secured (Use https only to the payment page).

You might have to redo the seo work to keep serp's so better to use https for the payment pages or you can take that on a subdomain as well if necessary (As recommended by Ajuas)

https is not recommended for seo.....

    All the best.....

He is not asking about the security or any advantages of going from http to https. He is asking about SEO changes after converting from http to https, if any?

    Hi Maketick,

You might harm your rankings if you do not set SSL properly. Google suggests you get a 2048-bit key SSL certificate and after you have set the certificate up you should 301 redirect your http pages to new https and verify your https site in Google webmaster.

For complete guidelines read this: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6073543

Come on, how come there is so much useless and false advise in one thread? I am utterly shocked how no one seems to either understand the question or give some knowledgeable tips.

The only thing you were advised correctly is to do 301 redirects. Nothing more. Apart from that I can safely confirm - switching to HTTPS will NOT harm your rankings. On the contrary - no more than a month ago Google actually announced that they now treat https as one of their algorithm ranking factors. So to all that claim that https hurts SEO I would advise to change their profession or at least stop misleading people!

Well there is a huge difference in both of them like https is more protected than http. https is generally used for protecting on-line deal exclusively in e-business sites or financial institution sites.

I would change the site if ONLY you use any money transactions, VERY important passwords, banks, etc. ;) For blogs or even small websites, you don't need a SSL certificate! ;)

I have worked on some HTTPS sites, And I got lot of problem with them.
We use https to secure our pages from being hacking, but it also affect on search engine ranking. It's not impossible to get high ranking on Search Engines with https, but I suggest u to do not turn your whole website in https.
just add this on theses pages which you want to secure (e.g. payment page or registration page )

Now https is said to be favored by search engines, you can switch to the secured version, but you need to do a permanent 301 redirect of http//www and http:// versions to the https:// version. If you don't do the redirect then each version, will be considered duplicated.

You will not lose the rank and page rank, but it will take sometime until the link juice, PR, and ranking to be transferred to the new version, meaning it will not be instant and could take few days to few weeks, but usually it does not take too long.
