Quick help needed please. Is there a difference between getting links to http://mydomain.com and http://www.mydomain.com I know there's an obvious difference, but does Google not see them as linking to the same domain? Help appreciated, Barry.
It is always recommended that you stick to one form of URL. While digg is using digg.com w/o the www, many others prefer to have the www in their published URL. This is how the linking power gets more strengh by not confusing Google. Good luck!
Thanks. Would it make a difference putting a 301 redirect on either or is it still the same site? Can you even put a 301 on it :s
If you use both forms you are splitting PR per one page if it's referred with www or without in a backlinks. If they're the same thing there's a chance that someoane does a copy/paste from an URL so you're always referred with the same address.
Cheers. I'm not so bothered about PR but more in terms of SERPS. Would putting a 301 redirect mean that all links now effectively point to one url? Is there something else I can do to merge them?
i allways prefer to use with www option and i have also redirect with www version to with www version. i also suggest you to make the same
Well no matter you are using www or not ; but what matters is you should stick to one form i.e : with www or without www . Else you are simple sharing your site's linkpower with your site which is not good at all in terms of serp along with pr factor as well . Looking forward to other's say on this. Thanks . Ashwini
Unless there's a stylistic reason (e.g., del.icio.us, digg, etc.), I always stick with the www. prefix as my preferred version, and 301 redirect non-www pages to the www version. Most people simply take it for granted that websites begin with www. As already mentioned, Google sees the sites as different sites, and this can dilute your PageRank, and consequently mess with your SERPs. Also, if you're tracking conversions, page views, etc., splitting the data between the www and non-www versions of the sites may result in misleading or difficult-to-interpret data.
All search engines see www.domain.com and domain.com as seperate sites. This could also have adverse effects such as being flagged for duplicate content between the 2. I would recommend using htaccess to implement a redirect for domain.com to www.domain.com. Ensure when posting links you also use the www.
I always use www and use htaccess to redirect non-www to www Also note that in Google Webmaster tools you can specify which version you want to use!
Please note that www is a subdomain of your domain domain.com It is the default subdomain and it redirects to domain.com That means http://www.domain.com gives the same site as http://domain.com
