HTML, XHTML, DHTML, PHP, CSS, JOOMLA, Javascript, Etc... I'm overwhelmed! (newbie)

First off, I know nothing about web design however I have begun studying it these past few weeks as I'm determined to become a web developer.

I've been doing a lot of research, but the more I learn the less I seem to know! Originally I thought that all I would need to know is HTML and CSS. But then I started seeing all these other codes based around php, joomla and so many other scripting languages. Now I have NO clue where to start!

Can someone PLEASE explain to me what all of these languages are for and what the difference is between them? I know what HTML and CSS are used for, but as far as all the other codes are concerned I am BEYOND confused.

Where should I start?? HTML and CSS? In what order should I progress?

I really need some encouragement here because I feel flooded with all these different types of script that I just simply can't keep up with all at once...

First of all, Joomla is a Content Management System.

PHP and JavaScript can do a lot. Just Google "PHP tutorials", or "JavaScript Tutorials" and you will find thousands of beginner's articles on how to use the language and what it does.

For starters, I recommend you learn JavaScript (A great JavaScript library would be jQuery), then go for PHP/MYSQL. There are just tons of languages to learn, and IMO you should start with those.

    Good luck.

Thanks! Is Javascript and PHP something I should learn in tandem with HTML and CSS or should I just focus on the later two before going into these other languages?

I read about Joomla via the link you provided but I don't understand what it's practical use is. In laymen terms could you please explain to me the benefits of using javascript, php and joomla and how they're any different from one other? Thanks.

Learn html and css first. Then learn javascript. I would not worry about libraries or templates for js until after you've got the language down good. Only after all that should you bother with any other language.

And make sure you use Firefox, Opera or Safari to test your pages on. IE will screw you up every which way.
