I don't think the search engines care either way. To them, an HTML document is an HTML document is an HTML document...

I think it has more to do with

    1) the types of people who blog - anyone can do it with no technical ability at all and
    2) you have less control over the HTML that is generated by blogs from an SEO perspective

Developing HTML sites typically requires some level of technical ability (at least a minimal knowledge of HTML) unless you're trying to build a site using Microsoft Word or Frontpage which IMO generate really crappy HTML. Most HTML sites allow full control over what values go where in the HTML making them easier to optimize.

Blogs require much less techinical ability... Click a couple radio buttons here, check boxes there... Poof! ;) And you have much less control over the values that are used for <h1>s, <h2>s, etc. You need SEO plugins to make them half way engine friendly.

I think it's easier to create a blog than a web site, but it's harder to SEO a blog than a website, so blogs as a general rule tend to rank lower. But done correctly by someone with an SEO background, either could be equally effective.

blogs usually have better navigational structure than typical websites. also, blogs being web 2.0 platform, it has user interaction capability which adds fresh content on the site that is viewed positively by google. rest of them depends on marketing and how you promote your site.

I think blogs are ranking well. Main reason is contents. Google and other search engines like unique contents. That's why blogs get rank. But generally I don't think any other reasons for search engines to treat sites differently.

I don't know I have not seen any websites to beat out the major sites such as amazon, dmoz, walmart, or any other major site. Really I think the main reason for blogs being number one is the constant updating. Anyway I run a blog website and forum and my website has the most new visitors and my blog has the most returns in fact the majority. I really think if you want to make it and you have the ability to make a website do so and then blog about your niche while promoting them both.

I would say blogs as they are normally more regularly updated and it is generally simpler to update blogs than regular websites. Blogs are designed for frequent updates. If you can update an HTML site as frequently and efficiently then by all means, it would rank just as well. The only problem with blogs is that many platforms do not support clean URLs from the get-go and some bloggers fail to utilize mod_rewrite, which holds their optimization back.

doesn't matter if it is a blog, cms, html static site, etc. If the site has regular updated content it will get ranked. Both on page and off page seo applies to all. It's exactly the same as you would say "are static urls better than dynamic urls?" Look at this forums url. It's dynamic and it ranks well.

Just my 2 cents of info.

I think you are pretty safe either way if you know seo and continually update your content. Then it is the normal backlinks and such that will make the difference. Big websites have an advantage because so many people are looking for them and they have a great backlink structure.
