If you optimize your html to the point of removing all of the white space, what does that do in regards to search engines?

I know it is best to have your content as high as possible, and doing this will put it in the 5th or 6th line, rather than down around 40 or so.

what is the general opinion on doing this?

It is not really about blank space but more when your important text is read compared to the rest of your page.
If you are using tables you can eventually tweak them to let SE read the content you want first. Otherwise use CSS.
