What you think guys are the most important elements in the head section of an HTML document that are employed by search engines?

i feel that google doesnt really care about meta-tags.. they are treaded just like other, visible text on the site.
also specifying the language is not really necessary... google gets itself...

also the validity of the html seemed without impact to me.
i saw one page of mine with totally invalid html rank much higher than a strict valid wordpress blog with similar content and link building.

Google just doesn't take the head section. Google takes the whole page. The more keyword related domain u have, the better. Google also looks at your title, so a short and good title is good. meta tags don't really matter, its your content ;)

    hello,

As per my view that HTML is important in search engine because it gives introduction to major search engines about our meta tags, which are optimized for search engines.

it is better to have ur main keyword as h1 tag and the rest as h2,h3,h4 tags.. this tells the search engines the importance of the content ..i mean it takes it highlighted

Most important- Description, title and H1 tags.

Closely followed by H2, H3 etc, alt, titles on links, follow strict XHTML and valid CSS

Google doesn't use keyword meta tags in web ranking. With that said, I would say your H1 tag and title tags are important on page factors. Other important factors were mentioned by WCVentures on this thread.
