html footer setup

It is so hard to keep track of whether older threds that offer workarounds for html sites are still accurate following an update. I have read through all of the relevant threads, but I just can't tell what the current solution to running the code on an html page is...

For example, there is discussion of using a passthrough.php file. Is this still necessary? There is a thread where the htaccess file has about 10 lines in it, but now it looks like the one line is all you need. I am just totally confused on what is current and what isn't.

I am using the code that is currently on the page where you get setup instructions (as of June 2nd ad_network_280.ph) So, I create the php file and the txt file in the main directory with write permissions to the txt file. I then add the one line of code to htaccess.

Then what? do I need a passthrough php file? Do I need to add a bunch more lines to teh htaccess file? The setup page gives examples of the include code for php and shtml pages, but what about html pages? Do I need one?

Here is the setup. The pages are php based and the server parses html and htm files as php. However, the footer file where I want the ads to appear is an html file that is included on all of the pages. Do i need an absolute path to the adnetwork php file?

If someone could just post the basic steps to get it to work on an html page that is included on all pages of the site for the current version of the script, I would be forever grateful....
