Does anyone know of a good HTML cleaner? I've tried a couple but one got rid of my background images and the other got rid of a nice block advert for specialist books. I want something that leaves the elements intact but gets rid of unecessary code.

I don't want to rent someone LOL. I know I'll probably end up doing manually but I thought I could save time as I've got hundreds of pages to do. This is the trouble with retiring. You have to get round to the things you should have done at the start!

The best way is to do it by hand to ensure you have done the job properly. This is why you should have used a reputable CMS to start off with!

You should do the clean up yourself or hire some one, and if you have too much errors on the html, it's much better to code it from scratch then trying to fix all of them.

Your brain is definitely the best cleaning tools on the net.

Last time I tried an automatic code cleaner it completely destroyed my layout.

Very true. Softwares always end up having some or the other glitch. Cleaning unnecessary tags and attributes using a software might not necessarily render the optimal performance.
I would suggest getting the page reviewed with online tools and altering selective changes suggested manually.
