is there a problem if there are too many redirects in a .htaccess? does it affect performance?

    How many redirects approximately?

Generally speaking no it shouldn't, but if you are on a shared hosting plan you may run into some performance issues when your site gets busy.

server looks into your .htaccess file for every operation it has to do with your site pages.
If you have too much code in your .htaccess file, that may slow down your site.

So, it is better to keep it small.
