htaccess rewrite

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with this rewrite rule?

RewriteRule ^(.*)/(.*).html search.php?q=$2&p=$1

I'm trying to get this:
http://www.example.com/search.php?q=dogs&p=2

to look like this:
http://www.example.com/2/dogs.html

(.*) is greedy. It will match everything regardless if you want it to. Replace (.*) with:

(.*?)

(Note the "?")
