I can't understand, why you will remove /index.php ? If you removed / it will server like http://domain.comindex.php instead of http://domain.com/index.php.

no, removing /index.php would look like http://domain.com rather then http://domain.com/index.php

CSM was right, i just had to fix up a different part of my .htaccess.

 

The main choices are mod_rewrite or multiviews.
The apache documentation under 'Content Negotiation' is relevant and interesting too.

 

A brute force method can be to redirect requests with ^index.php$ to domain/

 

Make a 301 redirect from index.php to homepage.
