.htaccess makes people download files

I've been trying to add coop advertising for a while now, also been trying with link vault however both require me to write some stuff in a .htaccess file. Whenever I do, after about 2 minutes I refresh one of my pages and it asks me to download a file. I don't know why though, and the page never loads up and this happens on every page.
The htaccess only has this written in it, nothing else:

    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html

Btw I don't even know what it is or what it's supposed to do so be umm, understandable for me please :) . <----Newb.

Well what that line is doing, is telling your server (assuming apache) to parse .php .htm and .htmls as php files, does the ads work without that line in them ?

    if so it isn't needed.

you might also not have permission to put that in your .htaccess file (the server admin can turn on what you can, and can't put in the .htaccess file)

Supposably I can, I'm just wondering should there be other stuff in my .htaccess file? For instance I've seen a lot of places saying this should be in it:
    /home/content/u/s/e/username/html

    or something like that.

I'm really fed up with this all, I can't get any advertising networks to work on my site.
