.htaccess file in, 404 Message. Out - All the index files are showing!

I changed the htaccess file with the line "DirectoryIndex index.html" as I thought it was the best one. The index file is a page which you can search Click bank with. In hindsight I shouldn't have bothered.

Since then, if the htacess file is in the root directory I am getting a "404" on the page, and to make matters worse, some of my other directories are being affected. I do some affiliate marketing and I have a "Recommends" directory. I can't any of the pages created especially for marketing. This question is not about marketing!.

Where the files are exposed, I'm putting a htaccess file in the directory and if necessary an index.html file so that the pages are getting a 404, but this is happening to pages I want to direct people to. Is it possible for the directories to have gotten some sort of virus? Or were they hacked?

Would really appreciate some help with this. I know that I'm not a consistent member here but I'm really desperate for some help from someone who really knows what they are doing.

    Thanks in advance.

Could you touch upon this a little more?

You have a .htaccess file rewriting what? index.html to DirectoryIndex?

Can you show the .htaccess code so we can have a better understanding of what you are trying to do? Or even explain in detail your objective.

    Cheers,

    Scott
