Lasik Eye Surgery for a Lazy Eye

If you’ve ever met someone with a lazy eye, they might have shared with you their frustration in regard to treatment options. As most of us know, there are a very limited number of treatment options available to lazy eye sufferers. Fortunately, the advent of lasik eye surgery has changed all that. Lasik eye surgery has given millions of the people the opportunity to once again see through their bare eyes – without the use of contact lenses or traditional glasses. Below you will find a demystified explanation of how lasik eye surgery helps those with a lazy eye. If you find some aspects of the surgery confusing, it might be best to consult your local lasik eye surgeon.

Before we even begin to discuss lasik eye surgery, we need to understand what exactly causes lazy eye. Lazy eye, also known as amblyopia, comes as a result of ocular interference sustained during childhood. This interference typically comes in the form of trauma, persistent turning of the eyes or ocular blockage. If amblyopia is neglected, the brain will learn to ignore the affected eye, and thus leave it in a state of blur.

So what can lasik eye surgery do to fix all of this? Well, lasik eye surgery can correct the problem eye’s vision in par with a pair of glass or contact lenses. For example, let’s say that your corrected vision with glasses is 20/40. If you go in for a lasik procedure, you should expect to have 20/40 vision without any glasses. While this might sound disappointing to some, you have to remember that amblyopia is a neurological disorder – lasik eye surgery won’t fix it. All the surgery can do is partially correct the issue.

Before you jump the lasik bandwagon, there’s another thing to you should know. While both glasses and contact lenses move restore your lazy eye to its correct position, lasik eye surgery won’t. This is one of its more significant downfalls that has many reconsidering it.

Now that you’re a bit more familiar with how lasik eye surgery works to correct lazy eye, it is paramount that you weigh your options carefully. Talk to your optometrist and see what he or she recommends. If they feel that you are a good candidate for the procedure, by all means proceed. Make sure that you are comfortable with the procedure before going under the laser!
