The amount of processor cycles your web apps are using. I've only once had a problem with CPU cycles once and that was when I got hacked owing to a vulnerability in WordPress.

    I'm very happy with Dreamhost.

Yes, you can use "DIRECTORYVAULT" to get $50 off any year plan. Full disclosure: this is an affiliate code from one of my sites. But it really is $50 off the normal price.

They've been great for me... Until I had a relatively complex custom application... But for a low-traffic personal site, they are a great company with great support.

i would strongly recommend that you do not go with with them They are majorly overselling thier servers and you will mostly likely only recieve 20-60kpbs. Check our thier official forums, even thier own customers are complaining and yet nothing is being done about it.

i recommend www.hostandfly.com for small webhosting plans and www.site5.com for more demanding sites

As many above have said, Dreamhost oversells. So does Godaddy, 1and1, and most of the other places that seem to offer massive amounts for very little.

Where most of them get you is in the CPU usage part that was mentioned towards the beginning of the thread. Different websites differ their cpu usage. A static html site will probably fair quite low on the usage. Many sites don't though. Most people get nowhere near the bandwidth offered before using up too many server resources.

The fact is, no host can really offer 1TB of data transfer for $8/month to each customer. They're usually counting on people joining up thinking 'more is better' who will not actually come anywhere close to hitting the maximum.

Now aside from that fact that you will probably never get to see that 1TB of transfer, hosts that oversell often have overloaded servers. This means your website could load slowly, and you might encounter various other problems.

Most people are better off going with a quality host that doesn't oversell. See what some others recommend. You can also look through http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=22596 which is a somewhat old thread that was recently revived. It might give you an idea of what some others are using.

That said, places like dreamhost do have their place, and while I probably wouldn't recommend them for a critcal business site, a lot of people do use them, and a lot of people seem to be happy with them as well.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

    Dreamhost seems a waste host.
After seeing this i purchased and its been 10hrs and still my account is
"This account is currently pending approval.

If you've already made payment, please just wait one business day... thanks!"

This really sxxks at present competitive business era.

I opened a ticket for my free domain name and received a reply after 9hrs

Definitely gonna claim for a refund.
Moreover their server status shows recent and continuing drawback

I have several sites with them on one account without problems.
I also signed up a client with them. The client changed their mind so I cancelled the hosting and got a quick refund.

I use them for several sites and I love it. Only issue that I have with them is sometimes you got to do some work on the .htaccess

Yeah... that would be good to know. Don't we usually write our own .htaccess files anyway? Or did you mean they don't support .htaccess on their servers?
