Yep, anytime. And yeah, there are a lot of things to think about. But if you ever need anything in the process of redesign etc. hit me up. I'll be more then happy to give you advice. Cheers, neverstudy
It look's not to shabby, but like others said the graphics and design need a change. But overall 7/10!
I wrote the crawler in ASP. It's very simple. I wrote about it in the middle of page one of this thread.
Working on a new theme for my search engine. It's not applied to the entire site yet, but this is what it would look like once it's done: http://www.uppersites.com/index2.html Please check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks in advance!
Though I can tell that this thread is dying out quickly, I have some news for you: Reading your comments in the past few days made me listen to your suggestions and changed the look and feel of my search engine. Though I couldn't satisfy all of you, I had to compile all the suggestions into one list of recommendations and started with the fixes: - The logo changed from ugly green to blue - Changed the query submit forms to rounded yellow - Modified the layout on the SERPs - Now using different BG color for the ads - Moved the most searched keywords from the front page to a new Top Tags page - Added a more whitespace around the content on the pages - Removed ugly tracking icon And there was a bunch of things I did not change: - Did not remove ads from the site. Sorry but they are there to pay the bills! - Though added a different kind of shadow to the logo and changed its color, it did not get completely redesigned because most of you liked it the way it was. Please check it out and let me know what you think! Thanks for your time and support! Kris
I like the feel of the search engine, and it has a nice modern feel. I can tell you took some notes from google...the search results page has an uncanny likeness to them. The only problem I see is that there's a gap in the search textbox. It might be on my end so for reference, I'm using firefox 2.0.0.5 on a 13" MacBook. It looks to me like the orange border is composed of left, right, and middle images and the right one is simply too far to the right. Good work though!
TheDivertex, Thanks for taking the time to check out my site. It's good to hear/read comments from a Mac user. I wish I had one so I could fix the search box bug. Maybe I could get a simulator or something. Or a Linux box with a Mac theme should work too I guess. It must be an OS specific bug because I'm using firefox 2.0.0.5 as well but it seems OK. I've tried it on XP IE6 and 7, and IE7 under Vista as well. I'll try my best to fix that bug! Thanks again! Cheers, Kris
Oh, this is interesting... Here's what I see in firefox on my mac: and here's what I see in Safari: Hope these help in the process!
Thanks for the screen shots TheDivertex! I just changed the size of the text box. I think it was too big and it pushed the frame apart. Could you please look at it again and let me know if it's any better? Thanks again, Kris
You got it taken care of for Firefox, but Safari still shows a break. The hole that is left on Safari is much smaller though! You definitely made it less than half as big. Just a little bit more should do it
I guess it brakes in Safari because of its height. Hmm... Maybe I could change the font for the text box smaller to make it fit the frame. But I think Safari doesn't support hidden borders for form elements, so it will still look a little weird... I wonder what percentage of Internet users use Safari right now, because all the changes I do here will affect it on other browsers. I just realized that I could just write a little script that checks the browser and if it's Safari, I could just show plain text box without the frame or change the font size for it. Lemme start working on it right now!
I would agree...go for the script! The vast majority of people are gonna be on FF because it's cross-platform After that is IE simply because of Microsoft's hold on the market. Even with all the Mac users out there, the majority of them (at least the smart ones!) will have downloaded FF. Safari is becoming an exception!
TheDivertex: The script is done. I wonder if it's working now... lojadeluxo: I was working on the site. I think that's the reason it slowed down a bit. It should be OK now! Oh, and thanks for liking it! I'm doing my best to make it better...
I just added some new features to UpperSites! Now you can choose to search for pages of different types: web, blogs, news, forums, wikis and adult (show everything with the adult filter off). Please check it out and let me know what you think! Thanks in advance! Kris
Bingo! The script works wonderfully. The only difference between firefox and safari is that safari still shows the border of the input textbox and the orange border, but it doesn't look tacky. No holes at all!
Hey, I looked at it. You have made it even better. Now you should concentrate on getting the desired results when (a) term(s) is searched. Keep working at it! -neverstudy
