How You Got Into Webmastering

Anybody have any good stories? I'll present a little bit of my past...

I started off as a wee lad who was always on the computer. When I was about 13 years old, I taught myself basic HTML, and made a kick ass Pokemon site. This baby had an orange background, frames (back when they were in style), and some pictures/links. I remember going to a bookstore and I was looking at the HTML books and some guy in the same section was like "You know HTML?", and I was like "Yeah a little bit." He then says to me "You stick with it, and you'll go far one day."

Yeah sounds straight out of a movie but that's how it was. I just lost interest (my best guess is that it was because I was 13 :p), and stopped fooling with HTML. I dabbled a little when I was 16 with making a fitness site, but never really stuck with anything.

Then about a month ago I got the genius idea for making a Myspace site, because of course there's only like 2 of them out there so mine would do awesome [/sarcasm]. I stumbled upon DP and learned many many things and met some great people.

It's now been about a month, and I own two sites (none of which are Myspace oriented), and I've made about $500-600 so far and the sites are all just starting up. So I'm excited for the future.

    So what's your story?

I can't remember, but i'll think about it. it's strange, it would be normal if i would have been a webmaster for 30 years, but i'm only for one

oh, started to remember. i was doing some businesses on the internet, like exchanging money from different ecurrencies, doing web design, programming, web development and i got into a nice business once that earned me a few hundred bucks ( much for me then ) and i got a domain with my nick ( sandossu.com ) then i heard about seo and tried to optimize it a bit. then i created a forum and started to learn about seo, affiliate websites and all this stuff. oh and sandossu.com wasn't my first website, it was the 10th i think, but the first were crap ( ptr/ptc/autosurf like )

    Lessee...

Had my own site on geocities back in 96, but didn't take design seriously until 98 when the ISP I worked for started having issues with their designer. Since I didn't have as much SysAdmin experience as the other 2 techs, I was elected to make the site changes.

Figured out I liked it, and my next job was for a web host, where I was both SysAdmin and web developer.

I built a DBZ site in 2000 and was hooked. Years later I've made a career from it.

Was playing some games online and thought the graphics were crappy so I started learning adobe photoshop after school. Then I wanted to learn how to put it on a page so i actually borrowed about 14 books from the library on CGI HTML XHTML DHTML CSS. My mom can vouch for me :) Then I kept a notebook. I started doing this at 11. My major accomplishment that got me staying in this field was when I made a paid posting company for my mother. We both ran it and made over $500 USD a month which was a big deal to a low income family with one parent to support the family. Then when we felt the market was going down we sold the company at $800. We knew we could get more we were just impatient.

I was a member of a videogame forum back in the late 90's. I really liked the environment and feel of online communities and then decided to move into it myself. My first site is still online and is a PR5 currently. :)

Since then I've gotten into PHP quite a bit as well as vBulletin "hacking." I have filed as a corporation, and have several "assets" to my company.

I have also done some insane things with vBulletin on 6 forums that I run.

Right now I run forums almost exclusively, but I have a few websites that I run, as well as a few ideas I have been tossing around for new sites.

    :)

Thanks my mother and I are currently focusing on creating our enterprise and buying cheap domains. Then we develop them and get them to gain PR. Sell them back for xxx range usually :). We're at an edge right now because I'm learning PHP to make a CMS and other useful PHP tools.

hm i played quake(1) with the team fortess mod on a my amiga (50MHz 68060, more than 40MB ram, 4MB gfx card, was enought for a rockin 320x240pixel 3d world :) ) in 97 or so. but i havent done much surfing those days just because i already had to pay ~100/month for my online time (pay per minute). my provider kicked me later because i used more than 300MB/month so they lost money on me :)

I'm an avid reader and bookbuyer and someday got tired of buying books I already had in my collection. The day I saw my favorite bookstore had a computer with internet connection I decided to put my books online. A great way to check if I already owned a book before buying.

So...I started by buying a book about HTML ;) and developped my first site.
In fact it is still online at : http://users.skynet.be/sky78329/ (please don't laugh :) )
Now, 3 years later you can see the result in my sig...
