I would target work from home forums .. just 5 forums with decent traffic and offer help on there .. post a brief solution on the site, and post link to your in-depth article on your site.

One of the forums you might target for signature advertising is mine, the Tech FAQ Forum.

    URL?
Does your site target windows OS?
If so, i think getting a list of some error codes and getting some AdWords running at those codes should be good. There is very little competition at those search terms so you buy them for cheap, which might get the best value of an advertising dollar. Yet, this is still apseudo idea.. In a nutshell, use PPC :D

    Free mothods?
Signature and link exchange has already been siggested so i think i am sorry, not aware of any effective.

    Good luck.

Stick with the best methods, which are:

    1) Article submissions.
    2) Participate in forums (work at home forums is a good suggestion)'
    3) A blog.

Now, one that is not an online solution, look to set up joint ventures with offline businesses.

If you're providing free resources, the best thing to do is simply offer as many as possible, and in different formats (ie ebooks, tutorials, online courses, blog, podcasts, online tools, general articles etc.). Over time people will keep coming back if you keep giving them more, and word spreads.

Every time you launch a new free service, write up a press release about it and send it to the free newswires at a very minimum. I have a template up still at www.allinfoaboutmarketing.com that you can feel free to use.

Forums are a good method. But make sure you're actually including your url, so people can get to your site.

Run a contest or something to generate some initial buzz.

    Just a few thoughts.

Find a few questions on venues like yahoo and source an article, how-to or whatever of yours. I've done this before, if its effective, easy and quality then it works out.
