I need some advice on how to go through with a site move, here's the situation: Site A: is currently live (let's call it mysite.com). It gets about 500-600 visits per day, equally amongst North America, Europe and Asia, and there is basically no time where it's dormant. It's runnning on an old CMS that is not cutting it anymore. Site B: is being developed in Wordpress (let's say that it's residing on the staging server account "mysite.org"). It's a massive rebuild of site A, with a lot of videos. Site B will be replacing site A entirely, and the old pages/categories of site A will have 301 re-directs to their new locations in site B. Site B will also be running on the URL that site A is currently using. I've never done this before - my question is how I can make the transition to point the existing domain name to another server account, so that the new site shows up? The part that confuses me is that the live site and the staging site are both on 2 separate accounts, under 2 separate domain names. Thanks, and hopefully this makes sense I don't have much server management experience at all, and I'm guessing it's a matter of pointing the DNS from one account to the other?
If using cPanel or something similar, why not simply put the old site domain as a Parked Domain on top of the new site domain, so that anyone going to the old will just go to the new? Otherwise, at your domain registrar, forward your old domain to your new domain.
