I have two thoughts to counter some of what is said in this post:

    1. Returning visitors are least likely to click an ad and they are also likely to use the back button to come back to your site.

    2. Adsense ads are least likely to scare off back linkers. Pop ups, dating, poker, pills, etc type ads would scare off linkers but Adsense is well regarded (businesses spends billions on Adwords).

the first rule of anything is to do research before you start.

Research the course at college that you're signed up to. Is it good, will it lead to the job you want?
You can study, earn money, play sport, relax: what is the impact of each choice?
You decide to earn money, you could flip burgers or work online. Make sure you're doing the most efficient means that will also be stimulating and enjoyable.

So, before you do anything, you have to be sure you'll get the returns you expected. Before you create your next blog read up on layouts, content, ad placement, directory submission, viral marketing... the list will grow.

You need to start reaching out to peers for links, directories for placement, and blog networks for support. This is self promotional which is terrible in forums but the answer to your question is exactly what I write about. Check it out

It is that loyal fanbase though that will continue to introduce new readers to your site and also go a long way to generating inbounds
I would never put up any kind of popups, dating or pill ads on my blogs anyway but that is a whole different industry and would have its own advice

It doesn't matter how well regarded AdSense is amongst publishers and AdWords customers, if you put up too many ads, people won't stay at your site and it will certainly hinder growth.

    Agreed yfs1.

The biggest mistake bloggers make is putting ads on before they get traffic. Some bloggers are even now writing php scripts to only show ads to users visiting from the search engines and disabling ads for visitors from social networking sites. Imagine getting 5000 visitors from digg and not showing them any adverts :) It works very well.

Also consider only putting ads on posts over a week old.

Remember, nobody will link to a site with too many ads. Just because engadget has 10% content 90% ads doesn't mean you can too.

just don't get upset if adsense don't work in early phase of your project..i haven't met someone who hasn't learn from mistakes by far, if adsense doesn't work, focus more onto developin 'loyal relationship' with your audiences..maybe it's not about adsense, maybe it could be affiliate..or if you manage to see what problems are they facing and basically no ones is there to help, produce a usefull ebook/manuals and sell to them...adsense is good if your blog receive heavy traffic, build them first, ;)

Don't forget that Digg wants unique information, not reproduced articles.

If you decided on article writing (one of the best online marketing methods) and prefered using a software for articles distribution (which should be your choice at some stage), I personally think that the best out there come down to 4 specific softwares, which you have to pick from the one that suits you most.

I've written a post on them and article marketing in general in my blog. You can view it here:

Just my $.02....don't put an add on every post....I generally go every 3-4 posts with mine...that way its not overcrowded...it also then has a better chance of getting into directories and such since it doesn't look like it was made for ads...remember the ads are a perk...without them, your blog is still the same.
