I would like to create an icon image for my chat room
however i would like the image background to be
    transparent if this makes sense,
anyone have any clues as to which tool i would use
    to create this effect?

    Thanks :)

use Adobe Photoshop, remove the background layer, and save it as PNG of GIF. It'll give you transparent bg image.

PNG works best however it isnt supported by old browsers. Also on Photoshop make sure that the background layer is transparent. You set this up when creating a new photoshop document.

Yes, switch to another application. You can get a free one that's widely used and has a great reputation. It's called Gimp and you can get it here. Open up your image then save it as instructed above - as a .gif or .png.
