Some of the more modern Flash sites i see for big movies etc are stunning. What's the next generation of website? Will we start to see more sites looking like Blu-Ray menus with fully moving backgrounds etc, or are too many sites still being built for 56k users?

I'll put it like this, out of 2,000,000 unique visits, less than 1000 have been dial up.
I guess a large part of the low dialup access could be due to my niche though.

I imagine some day it will be much like you envision. Some day I believe it will be common place for your television and Internet access to be built all in one. Hell, they even have appliances that can connect to the Internet.
I do believe a more "realistic" cyber world will exist someday. Put on your vrml helmet or go into your specially modified room and go travel the world via the net.

    All very exciting!

I think most sites are designed for DSL to the least these days. As time passes websites would become lot more dynamic in nature.

The next step in web development is probably XML, making stuff more dynamical and cacheable.
    That's my thought.
