How Will This Affect My SERPs?

A friend of mine had a .info domain name, and just recently purchased a .com dn and asked me to transfer the site over.

We decided we would keep the old .info site up as well, and were gonna have that page auto-transfer over to his .com domain.

I changed the nameservers over to the ones the host game me to use when I added the domain, and when I went to upload the .info files to the .com server I noticed they were already there. I then visited the .com site and there it was.

Then, I typed up a new index page for the .info site and when I uploaded it, the index page on the .com site was changed as well. I don't understand this as the 2 index files were stored in separate folders, and I definitely uploaded the correct ones to each.

Anyways, I was wondering how negatively it would affect the sites' serps if I left them as is, and had them both with the same index page on them. Will the fact that they're somehow on the same server or whatever the problem is (maybe someone knows this as well?) somehow save the site from duplicate content penalties?

Thanks ahead of time for the help and suggestions.

    Matt

if you are able to keep the same file names and architecture of your site than it shouldnt affect your rankings.

I am not sure about this very situation but we see in blogging websites that some times we have copies of same page in different tags and it doesn't cause duplicate content penalties. But if one copies a whole page from one domain to another domain then it becomes content theft which effects SERP. Isn't it?

Yes, Bloomtools, everything is exactly the same... it seems similar to how you have 2 different pages, one with the www. and one without, or one with the index.html or one without... but in this case I have one with .com and one with .info. I'm sure this must be something at least Google takes into consideration, huh?

i think it will effect your rankings even if you keep the same structure as all your backlinks will be pointing to your old domain.

If the .info domain has existing backlinks and you are permanently moving to the .com then you could set up a 301 redirect from the .info domain to the .com - this will then pass the link juice to the .com domain

evosys, that's what I originally planned to do, but when I upload any files to the .info site, the files are automatically uploaded to the .com site as well. I have no idea why it's doing this and wish I could figure out how to stop it from happening.

You will need to speak to your webhost about that.
