How will duplicate content affect my SEO?

I have an older website with about 20 articles that I wrote. I also have a newer website with an "articles" section. If I was to put my articles on my new site also, would that count as "duplicate content" and have a bad affect on my SEO or PageRank?

    Thanks

If it's on a different domain, then it would not HURT you, but it won't HELP much (if any).

You should use the rel="canonical" tag as this works cross-site (at least with Google anyway).

The big reason everyone warns about duplicate content is when it is within one domain. If it's on more than one domain, Google will try to cite the "original source" and de-value the second, third, fourth... occurrences of the article. With the canonical tag, you can SHOW Google which one is the original source, so that they don't get it wrong.

Okay thanks!! So basicly having duplicate content wont penalize a site at all?

So what if one site ripped off another site to a large degree? Like what if someone made an "article" site and just ripped 1000 articles off ezine or something? Would they be penalized or would it have no affect (other then the ripped articles not making it into the SERPs?)

    Thanks!
