i too started with php 1 week before,,,,,,,

    here what i did,,,,,,

went to w3schools and studied html, css and php/msql,,,, it tooked me 2 days to study all, including reference,,,,,

next i went to hotscripts.com --> PHP --> Scripts & Programs,,,,,,,, i searched for some free and simple scripts,,,,,

i found this site there http://www.groonesworld.com,,,,,,

it consists of contact form, guestbook, link directory, job, blog scripts,,,,,, start studying these scripts as in the order,,,, contact form is easy and blog is difficult,,,,,,

when you finish studying blog script, you will become a good php programmer,,,,

the next step is Joomla,,,,,,,, if you finished joomla, then you will become an expert,,, but it will take long time,,

BTW, i finished contact form and guestbook,,,,,

the book which i prefer is PHP & MySQL Web Development for Dummies by Janet Valade,,,,, it is 6 in 1 book, which is very useful since it deals with security, extensions, etc., which is necessary to code a big site

    Hope this helps

PHP must be joking. PHP E-book is of more that 10,000 pages and to understand full PHP you will waste your full life. So, if you are still interested Go Ahead. :)

I personally learned PHP from reading through examples downloaded from various websites, try finding a script that has to do with something relative with what you want to learn, like a user login, then try and rebuild it with various edits.

Anyway, examples are always the best teachers, W3 helps a ton too!

try joining a php developers mailing list.

    for example, go to http://www.php.net/mailing-lists.php

The "General user list" in this page is great, and it's very high volume. You learn so much from just reading people's emails and responses. Also they're great in answering any questions you may have.
