Does a search bar count as a "google ad"? Because you can only have three adsense units at a time.

I just replaced my own search box with the google one. It's more helpful and resourceful. Have earned some in the past. Let's see how much I can earn now there's a search on every page.

If you have a high-traffic site, a Google searchbar can be a nice (and profitable) addition to your site. I get around 300 unique visitors a day to my site, and get a few clicks now and then on ads from search. So I imagine if you get around, say, 1,000 visitors a day, you could make a few bucks a day off Google ads for search.

You should know that Google also offers a custom search tool, which is more flexible than its AdSense for Search tool. And you can connect your AdSense account to it, and get credits for ads clicked from it.

I did. People prefer text ads by magnitude of 2 orders... And that is before even considering the fact that in AdSense for Search you don't get cash till they click on the ads on the resulting page.

The numbers were along these lines:

AdSense for Content 10000 pageviews 250 clicks. at arbitrary $0.30 a click that amounts to $75 dollars.
AdSense for Search (in the same place and same 10000 pageviews) 135 searches and 35 clicks. At arbitrary $0.15 a click it amounted to $5.50.

The numbers actually similar to the ones in my earlier post. People don't like using search. Clicking the text ad is much less effort.

This test is somewhat inconclusive as A/B testing is kind of inappropriate here as you can have both, text ads and search together...

But my previous statement stands - people that use AdSense for Search on your site pick their own keywords and subsequently receive the ads that are usually cheaper than carefully optimized for ads of any site displaying AdSense for Content.

You are allowed to have at the same time on any particular page:

    • Up to three ad units may be displayed on each page.
    • A maximum of two Google AdSense for search boxes may be placed on a page.
    • A single link unit may also be placed on each page.
    • Up to two referral units from each referral product or offering may be displayed on a page, in addition to the ad units, search boxes, and link units specified above.

Be careful the site doesn't become cluttered with ads, though :)

I actually did that for a month and my overall earnings dropped.

If you read my earlier post you might see why that happened given my hypothetical example.

Hmm, I did not know that. I haven't used Adsense for awhile. Thank you.

Thinking more and more about this little situation...really hard to do any comparisons or rather you can do it way too many ways lol.

Search box vs Ad Unit...If it's an ad unit, it counts as an impression whenever anyone sees it. If it's a search box, it's only counted if someone searches. So, I guess the first comparison is how many people click on ads vs do searches...then you are comparing to comparable things. The problem is that you get immediate credit when the ad is clicked but there has to be a further click with a search result before you get a credit.

In essence, there are two CTRs to worry about with a search vs one with an ad unit. Ya know, sticking with ad units is probably safer or at least requires a lot less brain burning :)

Thats one of the few reason I have it on my site. It lets me know what people are looking for that I dont have.

Though I have to add that some of the stuff people search for is "weird", "bizarre" and nothing short of "sick".
