How well does adsense for search perform?

Im curious to know if decent money can be made from adsense for search. So if any of you out there use it, can you please let me know. Also i tried to find out what the users of my site are searching for but all i could see from my adsense account is the top queries - ie it doesnt list all the search phrases/keywords. Anybody got a clue how to view them all?

It fails becuase it isn't postioned right on most websites. They put them on top and just showcase them like normal ads, when they are a true way to retain traffic. THink about next time you post an article or something and put the search box on the bottom guess what the user's going to think. As soon as you get him or her interested in a subject they will search it try to find more info about it. Giving you more clicks. So in a way they are meant as a way to get money from users who were already set on leaving your website.

    Thank You

Thats actually very good advice / point.

I'm going to take it, and add it to the footer of my sites pages and trial it for a week or 2.

I have a website ( http://www.technobound.com/ ) it is basically a search portal. I've hardly made anything from the search, even though it gets quite a few searches a day! My content website with normal google text ads makes more, and I've hardly advertised it.

Seems you've been to my site then Diddy1 :)

Reason i've added google search at the top of my site is to enable visitors to search the articles on the site. Also i've made the search results open in a new window so as to retain the visitors. As far as i'm concerned, if my articles are in google index, then the google search will be able to search any articles based on keywords and that would save me money and effort to have a bespoke search facility on my site.

The thing is, for the same clicks I get about $1 per click on adsense for content, and about $0.05 for a click on search. However, I have 10% CTR on search and 3% on content.

So search is alright, it has much higher CTR, but earnings are still not as good.

My CTR is usually about 4 times higher for search than it is for content.

As far as PPC goes, it varies - sometimes higher, sometimes lower.

One thing that helps (that I think is a legit tactic) is to 'prime' the search box with search terms that are going to give you a higher PPC - i.e. add them in the value statement when you add the adsearch to your page.

A lot of users are too lazy to think of their own search terms, and are happy to use yours :p

Search earnings are just a trickle for me compared to content ads, too.

So it is just freestate who is an exception then - everybody else earns less with search than they do with content.

Btw what is prime the searchbox with search terms?

He is talking about editing the value field of the form (search box) in the code.. Im pretty sure this is against TOS though.

According to many Adsense Gurus' views, adsense for search would not be earning much. Your own search facility would be much better.

Just a hint that is against Google Adense TOS you are not supposed to affect the ads in any way. That method is only meant to be used when you use the free search box instead of the adsense one.

    Thank You

So can you do that or not? Against TOS?

    Raises an interesting point.....

I don't do this but the suggestion doesn't effect ads. If you have a student loan site and put "student loan information" as a default search, this is just performing a service for your readers.

I don't know if this is within the TOS but it is not manipulating ads any more than searching for any term would manipulate ads.

I find AdSense search to be a nice little earner on the side. Last month I made $315 from content and $44 from search. I would rather have the $44 in my pocket than someone else's.

However saying that I do worry that having the search box at the top of my site might cannibalise my AdSense content revenue.

What I mean by this is that rather than someone reading the adds and deciding which one to click they will instantly go to the search box, perform a search and leave the site (does this behaviour sound familiar?) I am therefore left with a measly .5c compared to .30c - .50c

I haven't decided to do anything about it yet. Does anyone else agree with this hypothesis?
