Its a tough niche. You will need to look for keywords with lower competition and try to get traffic that way.
There are many blogs and forums related to travel. That may be a good spot to start your link building. You may also want to distribute some articles. You could also do social bookmarking as you mentioned, but that is often a very temporary strategy.
