    Well you just take code that checks all the links on a single page, and make that recursive so that it will spider the entire site. At the same time you need to maintain a list of all the already checked urls so that you don't check them twice. Gets pretty complicated and inefficient.

    Like the previous comments already said, there are some external tools that you can use. If you use WordPress, you can install a plugin called "Broken Link Checker" which will automatically email you every time it detects a broken link on your website.

    You can go for XENU software, there are many websites available online for checking broken links but not as effective as XENU.

    Google webmaster tools will show you all the error page include broken links.
    I believe it the best tools while it help me to find out 400 smtg broken links on my site after i convert my site to new web design .
