Somewhere I read about links on .gov and .edu sites boosing your ranking. Is this true? If so, would a significant amount be necessary, or just a few? I have a Parenting Site in development, so I'm sure I can find some .edu and .gov site to link to it. Cheers! Ellen
I think they're pretty big. From what I've seen, even 1 of those "expert" links can make a big difference.
.gov and .edu sites appear to carry significantly more weight than .com sites. There is no straightforward answer to the number of links you need. It depends on the competitiveness of your search terms, etc. As with other links, the more the better.
In the linking arena, .edu and .gov IBL's are like gold. Having one of these is great, but more in this case is much better!
You might want to see aeiouy's post here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=44159 He quotes Matt Cutts as saying that .edu and .gov sites do NOT confer any advantage, other than via PageRank (since they tend to have higher PR).
