Back links can't harm your site so from submitting to directories you can only benefit... how much? it depends on the directory... from what i've seen 90% are (like) link farms but you can still find good free directories whith direct link wich will surely help your site's rank

Sure, directories are helpful. Certainly, they don't do you any harm. Many think Yahoo and DMOZ are very important directories to be in because they may affect SERPs. But honestly, submitting to all the directories you can afford may be worth it. The anchor text of you directories listings may help you in targetting specific key phrases in SERPs. And if you are after PageRank, then you need all the links you can get.

Link farms doesn't mean links with no useful content, actually link farms are those sites who list all the sites submitted to them quality or non-quality but directories only list quality ones. This is how you differentiate between a link farm and a directory.

    lol :)

well, i've seen lots of directories listing trashy links (not even sites, but deep links) just to have "content" for the directory...

The directories that are mostly likely to survive a future search engine culling will be those that are niche.

There are litteraly 1,000s of general directories. I know, I have one. What value does my directory offer over the other general directories. Nothing. As soon as the only value a directory has is offer a link to the site that is listed, surely that is indicative of a lack of quality? I mean, I get approx 25 submission requests a day. These sites are looking for bacck links. Nothing more.

Niche is the name of the game to survive the search engines response to this explosion in directories..

I believe that the value of directory links depends a great deal on the value of your own site. If you're offering something of value, you will generally do well out of submitting to directories. If it's borderline or even MFA, you won't get such a good return for the time you spend submitting.

Ya you are right many directories do that to fill their categories so that they dont appear to be empty so if you find a directory with no PR and no quality and with dynamic URL's just dont bother about submitting to them there are 100's of other directories which are much more high in quality then them.
