You can create FB fan page for free with a vanity short URL, start promoting it first on your site and to existing customers, get involved in more communication there and people will start noticing and gathering. Then, when you have fans you can post short blurbs for news on the page wall and they will appear in fans' news streams, too. Similar for twitter: start following people of interest, get involved in the conversations/mentions/retweet. The more you pay attention on the communication there the better with time. Yes, time consuming but worthy!
