I don't think you can use adsense in the free ones either... read Wordpress's FAQs and they address that.

Nope. No adsense on free hosted word press. I think they allow one affiliate link or "Donate" button, and that is it.

Self Hosting has it's privileges :D

No ways around that I'm afraid.

The blogs tend to be excellent though- most of the stuff is not MFA because of the rules they enforce.

That's true ! There are a lot of good blogs on wordpress.com..blogging in it's purist form, if you will. The downside is...no monetization options.
I do recall seeing selling a product on some (1), but if you want to go wild and do what ever you want, you have to pry open the wallet, or save your candy and soda money and get a domain and hosting.

Who said you can't have AdSense on your WordPress blog??? I have a Wordpress blog with Adsense running on it here http://inmate-connection.com/Wordpress/

I have to figure out the AdSense plug in though....cause it is only allowing me to put one ad per post.

Yours one is paid hosting, using wordpress as your platform. What we are discussing here is whether you can put adsense on a free wordpress blog, of which url usually read as yourblog.wordpress.com

Welcome to the world. If you want to do it your way, you have to have your own stuff, other than that, you are on someone else's dime and subject to their rules.

I know if I'm paying all the bills, I'm making all the rules so they benefit me:rolleyes:

I think the fact that they offer a free service of this magnitude to everyone who want's it is remarkable. I guess they figure that people who are serious about actually going into business..come up with the money to do it their way.

Get creative, If you have any skills, offer them in exchange for free hosting on someones account.
There is always a way (legally) if you want something bad enough.

Well, you don't want to add their blog to your domain, people want to use their own domain...but if your hosting account is large enough, you can host anyone's blog that you want, and do what ever you wish.

Downside is you have to give them FTP access which is also access your blog. If you plan to make a business out of this, best to get a reseller account with your hosting provider.
